If the picture buffers or keeps freezing, the cause is usually not the service but the connection at home. Here’s what internet speed you need for IPTV and how to get the most out of your connection.
Our recommendation
| Quality | Recommended speed |
|---|---|
| SD | from 6 Mbps |
| HD / Full HD | from 16 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | from 50 Mbps |
These values are per device. If several people watch at the same time or a large download runs in the background, you’ll need more.
How to test your speed properly
- Run a speed test on the device you watch on – not on your phone in another room.
- Test at the time you usually watch, for example in the evening.
- Don’t just look at the average: if the speed fluctuates a lot, it can buffer despite high values.
Wi-Fi or cable?
An Ethernet cable is almost always more stable than Wi-Fi. If that isn’t possible:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz – it’s faster but has a shorter range.
- Place the router in the open and close to the TV.
- A Wi-Fi repeater or mesh system helps in larger homes.
More tips against buffering
- Restart router and device – this fixes many problems instantly.
- Reduce load from other devices: downloads, updates or cloud backups slow your connection down.
- Adjust the quality: with a weak connection, choose the HD instead of the 4K version of a channel.
- Increase the buffer: many player apps let you enlarge the buffer, for example in TiviMate under Settings → Playback.
