When you get an IPTV subscription, you’ll often read two terms: M3U and Xtream Codes. Both are ways for your app to get channels, movies and series. Which one is better depends on your app – but usually there’s a clear favourite.
What is an M3U link?
An M3U link is a single web address. Behind it is a text list of all channels – each with name, group and stream address. The app loads this list and shows the channels.
Pros:
- Works in almost every app, even VLC on a PC
- Easy to share: one link, done
Cons:
- With large channel lists the file is huge and loads more slowly
- Movies and series are often not cleanly separated
- Depending on the app, the TV guide (EPG) has to be added separately
What is Xtream Codes?
With Xtream Codes you enter three details: server URL, username and password. The app then requests content directly from the server – live TV, movies and series separately, including categories, images and the TV guide.
Pros:
- Clear: live TV, movies and series in separate sections
- Faster, because only what you need is loaded
- TV guide and cover art usually automatic
Cons:
- Not every app supports Xtream Codes (most current ones do)
Our recommendation
If your app offers Xtream Codes, use Xtream Codes. That’s the case with TiviMate and IPTV Smarters – and it’s the most convenient option. You mainly need the M3U link for programmes like VLC or older apps.
With IBO Player Pro you don’t have to worry about either: you send us the MAC address and device key, and we add the subscription for you. How it works is shown in our IBO Player Pro guide.
What it looks like in practice
Xtream Codes in TiviMate: Add playlist → Xtream Codes → enter server URL, username and password. A detailed guide is in How to set up TiviMate.
M3U in VLC: Media → Open Network Stream → paste the M3U link. The channels appear as a playlist.
Security: don’t share your login
Whether M3U link or Xtream Codes – both contain your personal login details. Don’t pass them on or post them publicly. One subscription is valid for one device at a time.
You receive both options from us via WhatsApp after purchase or for the free 24h trial. Which app suits your device is shown in our app comparison.
