IPTV Buffering or Freezing? 10 Fixes That Actually Work

Picture hangs, buffers or freezes? These 10 tips on router, Wi-Fi, buffer, app and device get your IPTV running smoothly again.

Nothing is more annoying than a picture that freezes in the middle of a match. The good news: in most cases the problem is at home and can be fixed in a few steps. Just work through the following tips in order.

1. Restart router and device

Sounds trivial, but it helps surprisingly often. Unplug the router and your streaming device for 30 seconds. Afterwards memory and connection are fresh.

2. Measure speed on the right device

Run a speed test directly on the device you watch on – not on your phone in the next room. As a guide, you need around 16 Mbps for Full HD and 50 Mbps for 4K, per device. More in our guide internet speed for 4K.

3. Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi

A cable is almost always more stable than Wi-Fi. Many TVs and boxes have an Ethernet port, and there are inexpensive Ethernet adapters for the Fire TV Stick. With 4K in particular this often makes the biggest difference.

4. Optimise your Wi-Fi

If a cable isn’t possible:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of 2.4 GHz
  • Place the router in the open and raised, not in a cupboard
  • In larger homes use a repeater or mesh system

5. Reduce load from other devices

Downloads, updates, cloud backups or video calls on other devices share the same connection. Pause them as a test and see whether the picture becomes steadier.

6. Increase the buffer in your app

Many players have a buffer setting. In TiviMate you’ll find it under Settings → Playback. A larger buffer bridges short fluctuations in the connection.

7. Choose a lower quality

Many channels are available in 4K, FHD and HD. If your connection is weak at the moment, switch to the HD version. The picture is a little less sharp but runs more smoothly.

8. Update app and device

Outdated apps or device software can cause problems. Check the app store or system settings for updates. On Android devices, also clear the app’s cache.

9. Free up storage

Streaming sticks in particular have little storage and memory. Uninstall apps you don’t use and delete old installation files. The device becomes noticeably faster.

10. Try a different player

Sometimes the app is the cause. Switch the internal player as a test (in TiviMate, for example, between the playback options) or try a different app. You’ll find an overview on our apps page.
